Best Docking Stations for MacBook Pro (M3, M4, M5 — Pro and Max)

A MacBook Pro can drive anywhere from two to four external displays depending on its chip, and a 16-inch model can draw far more power than a basic hub delivers. Pick the dock that matches both.

How many monitors your MacBook Pro supports

From Apple: M4, M4 Pro and M5 support two external displays; M5 Pro supports three; M2 Max, M3 Max, M4 Max and M5 Max support four. A base M3 MacBook Pro supports two with the lid closed. See our full Mac display-limits table for every chip.

A dock cannot exceed these numbers, and Apple notes a hub or daisy chain can carry two displays over one Thunderbolt port without raising the chip’s maximum.

Thunderbolt 5 or Thunderbolt 4?

The TS5 Plus only pays off if your Mac has Thunderbolt 5 ports (check “Thunderbolt 5” in your model’s tech specs) or if you need 140W charging or 10Gb networking. On a Thunderbolt 4 Mac the TS4 gives you the same everyday experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is 98W enough for a 16-inch MacBook Pro?

It keeps most workloads charged, but a 16-inch Pro under heavy load can draw more. If you push the GPU for long sessions, the 140W TS5 Plus is the safer choice.

Can a dock add more monitors than my chip supports?

No. Apple says hubs and daisy-chaining do not increase the maximum number of external displays for a given chip.
